To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The verse starts with a declaration of Allah’s oneness and uniqueness, which is the core belief of Islam. It then describes some of His attributes that show His perfection and majesty:

• He is Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living), which means He has no beginning or end, He does not die or decay, He does not depend on anything for His existence, and He gives life to everything.
• He is Al-Qayyum (the Sustainer of [all] existence), which means He maintains and governs everything by His will and power, He provides for all His creatures, He does not need anything from anyone, and nothing can harm or benefit Him.
• He is not affected by drowsiness or sleep, which are signs of weakness and fatigue. He is always alert and aware of everything that happens in His creation.
• He owns everything that exists in the heavens and the earth, which are His creation and domain. He has full control and authority over them.
• He does not allow anyone to intercede or intervene with Him except by His permission, which shows His sovereignty and justice. He does not need anyone to speak on behalf of anyone else, but He may grant permission to some of His chosen servants out of His mercy.
• He knows everything that is past, present, and future, and nothing escapes His knowledge. He knows what is hidden and what is apparent, what is in the hearts and minds of His creatures, what they say and do, what they intend and plan. He knows everything that they do not know.
• He does not share His knowledge with anyone except whom He wills, which shows His wisdom and generosity. He may reveal some of His knowledge to some of His messengers or angels or believers as a sign of His favor and guidance.
• His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, which shows His greatness and glory. His throne is bigger than anything we can imagine or measure, and it represents His dominion and majesty over all creation.
• He does not get tired or weary by preserving and managing everything that exists, which shows His strength and power. He does everything with ease and perfection.
• He is Al-Aliyy (the Most High), which means He is above everything in rank, status, honor, dignity, and greatness. He is exalted above any deficiency or defect.
• He is Al-Azim (the Most Great), which means He is incomparable and unparalleled in His attributes, actions, names, and qualities. He is greater than anything we can think or say about Him.
